Remember that a blank line still carries font properties. Reduce all large-sized fonts to a maximum of 18pt. Too many styles with too many attributes will cause problems and inconsistency in your text. This can lead to your text formating and fonts changing size or position in your ebook. Styles in Word help you solve this common problem. This is the area that causes the most errors in a document.
This help page from Microsoft gives a good basic guide to using styles. My advice is to use only a few styles.
Book Format vs. Manuscript Format
Stick to the basic ones such as Normal, Heading 1 and Heading 2. You would use Normal for your body text, and Heading 2 for your chapter titles. Heading1 should only be used for your book title. Just think about what happens when you read an ebook in landscape or portrait mode and how the text changes. Also, reading an ebook on different screen sizes from a smartphone to a tablet needs fluid text. Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

Hello everyone! Thank you so much! This was easy to follow and took away a big part of the learning curve for me. I appreciate it. The point is, using your and Kindles, instructions, you cannot have Eg. If you first format as per your No. So, your contents and chapter headers and sub-headers will all be either left aligned or centred, as per the first part of the document you format. That is, whether when you initially format centred or left aligned text. You must choose one format style, you cannot have two or more.
Either be honest with your advice, or give it in full. Hi, nevertheless, have tried your 6 easy steps, just like Kindle instruct, and am awaiting results. For one, the paragraph breaks were not clear, and I had to use double breaks. Two, I would have to arbitrarily put page breaks in more than I wanted because it was often the case that a subheading or picture would appear seperate from the text in awkward ways. Three, the formatting headaches were inconsistently displayed on different devices kindle, smartphone, tablet, etc , so it was often a pain to fix these errors.
Would fix a lot of formatting headaches and be greatly appreciated. Try contacting Carla King www. Thanks for that. But even after all said an done I do go over my books about 1 million times…and am sure there are still some issues.. These tips seem great for novice writers like myself. Thank you Kristen! Hi there. Would that not work to ensure the document is formatted to Kindle specs? But designers of ebooks can get you the best results.
So what we want is to select Use hyperlinks instead of page numbers. Set the Formats to From template and the Show levels to 1. Test all the links by holding down CTRL and clicking on the text. If it all works in Word, then it will work on Amazon Kindle. There are just a few extra steps that you need to do to make sure the layout is that of a fiction book. The first thing that you need to do is to change the look of your chapter text. Highlight a portion of your chapter text, then right-click to select Paragraph. The spacing also has to be removed.
The paragraph Spacing Before and After is set to 0 to give it the general feel of a professional novel. Click OK. Now, after making that change, highlight the text, right-click on Normal , and click Update Normal to Match Selection. This will change all the Normal text in your book to match the settings that you just updated.
How to Format Your Book for Kindle Using Microsoft Word in 6 Easy Steps
What happened when I updated the Normal text is that it also updated Headings 1—3, the titles, and the subtitles. This causes the headings, titles, and subtitles to be off-center. Change the paragraph settings for each of the styles by following two simple steps. Start with Title style. Highlight the title, right-click on it, and select Paragraph. Add spacing where you see fit. Check out this video walk-through showing you how I format a book for Kindle right on my computer screen!
